The Isokon Gallery

Isokon Building, Hampstead: Modernist Architectural Icon This collection celebrates the striking exterior architecture of the Grade I listed Isokon Building in Hampstead. Through my lens, I've captured the clean lines and revolutionary design of this modernist landmark – a pioneering experiment in urban living that transformed Britain's architectural landscape. Completed in 1934 and designed by architect Wells Coates for visionaries Jack and Molly Pritchard, the Isokon Building (also known as Lawn Road Flats) stands as one of Britain's most significant modernist structures. Its distinctive façade, with smooth concrete exterior, elegant curved balconies, and ribbon windows, exemplifies the revolutionary "International Style" that broke decisively from traditional British architecture. Each photograph highlights different aspects of the building's remarkable exterior design – the sweeping horizontal lines, the thoughtful play of light and shadow across its pristine white surfaces, and the innovative structural elements that made it so revolutionary for its time. The images reveal how this avant-garde structure still maintains its powerful visual impact against Hampstead's more traditional surroundings nearly nine decades after its completion. Once home to numerous influential creative figures including Bauhaus luminaries Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, the building itself tells the story of modernism's journey to Britain and the radical new approach to urban living it represented.
